21 / 03 / 2008 - MMM 167 - Piper Alpha 'Absent Friends' Token - Grand Lodge of Scotland Benevolence Fund Token - £12.00 *
In 1998 a group of offshore, Freemasons commissioned a ‘Masonic Token’ to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster in remembrance of their 167 friends and colleagues, several of whom were Freemasons; who lost their lives on the evening of the 6th July 1988. The sale of the commemorative token raised the sum of £1,750 (seventeen hundred & fifty pounds), which was donated to the Grand Lodge of Scotland Benevolence Fund. Alex Huskie presented Lord Burton, the Most Worshipful Grand Master Mason of Scotland a cheque for this sum, along with a framed history of the fund raising and in respect of the Brethren who were lost whilst carrying out their duties on the evening of the 6th July 1988.

To commemorate the 20th Anniversary a limited number of special remembrance ‘Absent Friends’ fully enamelled Masonic tokens have been commissioned to mark the anniversary of 6th July 1988 and it is intended that the proceeds from the sale of the tokens once again be donated to the Grand Lodge of Scotland, Benevolence Fund.
